Cheap Eats Auckland CBD: Japanese Curry and Pancakes

Image
My previously regarded cheapness, coupled with a desire to continue content on my blog has given birth to The Student's Guide to Even Cheaper Eats, in which I endeavour to satisfy my tastebuds and stomach during my schooling years in Auckland CBD with a meal on no more than $5 a week. Evidently, about four months since returning home from Japan, my sister and I had a sort of nostalgic desire to return to the country to eat the food, to be in the country itself and relive the excitement of visiting a place we had, for years, desired to go to. However, it's obviously not as easy as purchasing a ticket and taking a long weekend off to eat the food, so we picked the next best option of a true Japanese-run fast food-style Japanese eatery: Japan Dining You . Japan Dining You, sells predominantly Japanese-style curry, along with donburi bowls for those who feel like more substantial dishes, and a variety of sides to add on top such as mini spring rolls, potato croquettes, and brea...

Cheap Eats Auckland CBD: Popa's Pretzels

My previously regarded cheapness, coupled with a desire to continue content on my blog has given birth to The Student's Guide to Even Cheaper Eats, in which I endeavour to satisfy my tastebuds and stomach during my schooling years in Auckland CBD with a meal on no more than $5 a week. Popa's Pretzels has earned itself a large and ever-growing reputation as a popular cheap eats destination for people within the city centre keen for a hot, light meal. Located very conveniently opposite the Aotea Centre and only a couple of minutes' walk from the Auckland City library, its position on the corner of Rutland street makes it easily accessible and very noticeable for passers-by. Despite rivalling the very popular Toro Churro next door, Popa's has still earned itself multiple excellent reviews online , and it was inevitable that the food, photos, and menu would draw me in as a customer with only a few coins to spare. Again armed with my sister, I was armed with a...

Cheap Eats Auckland CBD: Jewel of Bombay

My previously regarded cheapness, coupled with a desire to continue content on my blog has given birth to The Student's Guide to Even Cheaper Eats, in which I endeavour to satisfy my tastebuds and stomach during my schooling years in Auckland CBD with a meal on no more than $5 a week. Jewel of Bombay Inevitably, there's always that week or two in the semester where it seemed every day has timing too awkward to escape from campus for a good meal, but I didn't expect this one to come so early. Between lectures, extra activities, and late bus debacles (amongst other things), there wasn't a good solid hour to sneak away and indulge on food with as little money as I could possibly spend. Thankfully, there's always the on-campus dining options, and while some are mind-blowingly ridiculous in their pricing (I'm looking at you, hipster three-coffee-menu, gluten-free-vegan-dining cafes) there is an equal number of choices with a more reasonable range. Jewel of Bom...

Cheap Eats Auckland CBD: Nice Dumpling

My previously regarded cheapness, coupled with a desire to continue content on my blog has given birth to The Student's Guide to Even Cheaper Eats, in which I endeavour to satisfy my tastebuds and stomach during my schooling years in Auckland CBD with a meal on no more than $5 a week. NICE DUMPLING This week I've carried over last week's $1.2 to total a very generous $6.20 budget, traipsing the area accompanied by Sister #2 for a good solid meal with the minimal student wallet. We settled upon a small but promising store directly adjacent to No. 1 Pancake, a small shop called Nice Dumpling that offers a limited, but dirt-cheap menu. The impressive crowd from previous wanderings made it a promising destination and a definite must-try on any Cheap Eats list, and with a companion to aid my cheapist adventures, my sister and I took advantage of the deals to try a range from the menu. MENU AND ORDER The prices centre around $5, which can buy 3 steamed buns, 10 ...

Cheap Eats Auckland CBD: No.1 Pancakes

Many know well enough that being a student is not easy; balancing lectures and clubs amidst hours of study (or, at least for the diligent) is a challenge without the added factor of money. Although living at home (read: mooching off parents) removes any problems I may have had with extra bills, I still have to consider what $9-a-day bus fares on a 5-day-a-week schedule will do to my wallet and my already frugal mindset. And yet, social requirements, as well as the foodly temptations of the city has me wondering whether I can spare the extra few dollars for a hearty meal. Thus I present: The Student's Guide to Even Cheaper Eats, as presented by cheapist extraordinaire, yours truly. Aware of the student deals available in the city, I've limited myself to a generous budget of $5 a week as I attempt to satisfy not only my tongue but also my stomach. Any money not spent may be carried on for the next week, and funds not spent by the end of the semester shall nestle happily back in...

Cheap Eats Central Auckland: Ngopi

To my limited (possibly non-existent) fan base, this is a post to inform all that I am not dead. Instead, a reminder of how truly lazy I am. In fact, despite perhaps hundreds of blog-worthy occurrences over the past five or so weeks in which I have been absent from this site I have not yet bothered to recall a single detail, on the partial excuse that I a.) haven't the time and b.) have no photographic evidence. And while b.) plays a rather prominent role in my absence it would hardly excuse such a long and unnecessary break. Besides, this blog isn't to broadcast my deep and mushy feelings to the public (or, at least, those who find interest in reading small, pointless blogs which have no definite purpose), but rather an outlet in which I can rant over minor events and pointless details, many of which I am afraid to expose due to my irrational fear that I may be rejected for my own personal opinions. However, in a recent recollection of this blog's existence I made ...
